The Great Buddha statue of Khai Nguyen Pagoda in Son Dong commune, Son Tay town, Hanoi city, was started construction in 2015 with a message for world peace. After 9 years, the statue has now basically completed its works and officially welcomes tourists to worship.

The Buddha statue is about 72 m high, recorded as the tallest in Southeast Asia, with a base of more than 1,200 m2. The base is a giant lotus flower that blooms with three layers of petals arranged alternately, evenly divided around the statue’s body, imbued with Vietnamese Buddhist culture.

The Buddha statue’s hand is 9 meters long, the left hand holds the lotus flower, the right hand carries the image of the Dharma wheel. The Bach Hao mark (mark on the forehead) of the Buddha is made of bright red monolithic stone.

Each doorway has a base attached to the Garuda symbol or Kim Si eagle, a sacred bird in Hinduism and influenced by Buddhism.

The statue is designed with 16 floors, of which 12 floors have elevators and stairs. Each floor is decorated with its own worship style, the first floor is where the ancestors of the great ancestors are placed.

The second floor is the place to place and worship the 33 incarnations of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Prominent among these is the Amitabha statue sculpted from solid Canadian jade, weighing more than 2 tons.

The place to worship Medicine Buddha is located on the fourth floor.

The Medicine Master is considered a Buddha who understands and understands all medicine in this world and beyond. He can cure all the diseases and sufferings of sentient beings, the delusions caused by greed, anger, ignorance and afflictions.

In addition to the large statue, the inside also contains thousands of small Buddha statues made of many materials such as composite plastic and jade.

During the Dragon Festival, Khai Nguyen Pagoda welcomed tens of thousands of tourists to worship the Buddha statue.

According to historical inscriptions, the pagoda was built in the first half of the 16th century. Over the centuries, by 1990, the pagoda had degraded and almost become ruins. Since 2006, the pagoda has been restored by the People’s Committee of Son Tay town. As for the great Buddha statue built by monks, nuns and people, there are still many unfinished items.
