The Dong Lam plateau is known as a new place on the tourist map of North Vietnam. This place possesses poetic and charming beauty with green grass, and a clear lake, surrounded by majestic rocky cliffs.
Dong Lam belongs to Huu Lien commune, Huu Lung district, Lang Son province. With an area of about 100 hectares, this place was once likened to the Mongolia or Vietnam.
Dong Lam is not too far from Hanoi, only about 120km to the north. Visitors can ride motorbikes along National Highway 1A or take a car in the direction of the Hanoi – Lang Son highway. The road to Huu Lien is quite beautiful, and flat, depending on the vehicle or motorbike, it will take visitors about 2-3 hours to get to Huu Lien commune. From the center of Huu Lien commune, it takes about 3km to reach the Dong Lam steppe.
Anh Hung Vi (born in 1993), a local photographer, shared that there are two most beautiful seasons in Dong Lam, which are the floating season and the dry season. Dong Lam is only flooded after days of continuous heavy rain and a lot of water from upstream.
Usually, this phenomenon will start in March, the showers pour down causing the water level in the steppe to gradually rise, changing day by day. The low grass is gradually flooded until the whole steppe is flooded with water, leaving only a few high grass fields and large trees halfway submerged, creating a completely new Dong Lam.
Normally, the flood season in Dong Lam is from July to September, and the dry season is from January to March
The floating season in Dong Lam is not long, depending on the weather conditions, the water goes up or down quickly or slowly, maybe only a few days, maybe 2-to 3 weeks, the Dong Lam steppe will run out of water. Therefore, in order to be able to admire the poetic beauty of the steppe during the floating season, visitors must take advantage of time and contact local people to capture information.

In the dry season, Dong Lam is back to a true steppe covered with verdant green lawns with large herds of horses and buffaloes grazing.
