Field hospital in a mountain cave on Cat Ba island

Quan Y Cave is located in Hai Son village (formerly known as Khe Sau), Tran Chau commune, Cat Hai district, Hai Phong. More than 10 km from the center of Cat Ba town, Quan Y cave is located halfway up the mountain, next to the road across the island.

The cave is located at an altitude of more than 100 m above sea level. To explore, visitors have to follow the small path according to the signs and then climb by the iron ladder to reach the cave entrance.

Previously, the cave was named Hung Son, named after a general of the Tran Dynasty who fought the historic Bach Dang battle and discovered the cave. Later, in the 1960s, when the US stepped up bombardment of the North, the cave was converted into a field hospital and was named Military Medicine since then. This place treats wounded soldiers, is also a shelter, to avoid bombs and bullets of local residents and evacuees from Bach Long Vy island.

Quan Y cave has a concrete and reinforced structure, estimated at 2,000 m2, enough for 100 people to come for treatment at the same time. Right at the entrance to the cave is a solid iron door, curved and raised to resist bullets or bomb fragments. Inside, visitors will see the grandiose hospital scale, including 3 floors and 17 function rooms.

The 1st floor includes 14 functional rooms such as: operating room, waiting room, medicine room… Hang Quan Y also has a cooking stove and to avoid the smoke rising from being detected by the enemy, the transportation system of gas pipes burns smoke in the area. These are all located deep underground.

Extra compartment, a place dedicated to washing hands and medical equipment.

The 2nd floor has a rather bumpy terrain, so it has been used as a movie theater, a swimming pool and a place to practice and test the fitness of local soldiers.

From the 2nd floor to the 3rd floor, where important military meetings are held, a secret passage is designed. The 3rd floor also has an emergency exit to the side of the mountain to protect privacy and safety. This place is currently fenced and banned area signs, so visitors can only hear about it through the guide.

Corridors lead to the rooms and to the area of the floors.

The exit door is the same size as the entrance and is hidden behind large stalactites.

The exit of the cave is at the back of the mountainside. Visitors will be able to climb stairs and then walk along a gentle trail. With forest trees on both sides, visitors will be immersed in nature when leaving.
