Legend has it that in the past, Bac Lieu people lived by fishing far away, most of them depended on the sea to make a living. Every house has at least one man who goes out to sea for a few months before returning. The wives and mothers can only stay at home to take care of the family and wait for their husbands and children to return safely. Once, just as the husband had just set sail, there were signs of a fierce storm coming on land. The wife was extremely alarmed but was unable to notify her husband. So she kept standing by the beach, facing the East Sea, waiting and constantly reciting Buddhist sutras and praying for Bodhisattva’s blessing. Then, an old woman appeared and was helped by her wife with food even though she was worried about her husband’s safety at sea.
At this time, suddenly a strange phenomenon occurred, which was a harbinger of the visit of Bodhisattva. He had just disguised himself as a wife and was very touched by her sincerity. The next day, the fishing boat with her husband returned and miraculously escaped.

Unique architecture of Mother Nam Hai Pagoda in Bac Lieu
According to local people, at first, Quan Am Pagoda in Nam Hai Bac Lieu was just a small and simple house located on the coast, worshiping Buddha.
In 1973, the monk Thich Tri Duc came here and built a more solid temple with an 11m high statue of Quan The Am Bo Tat with a view towards the East Sea. The statue of Buddha located in the middle of the temple yard has a width of 90m, a width of 45m and was built in 2 years, and completed in 1975.
