Hanoi flower bicycle photo wins international prize

The photo “Bicycles and flowers” taken in November 2021 on Hanoi’s ceramic street by author Nguyen Phuc Thanh won the national photo prize of the Sony international photo contest.

The Sony World Photography Awards (SWA) has just announced the national and regional winners of 2022. These works were selected by a jury from the Open Competition, Each country that has a first prize winner will be given a camera and lens kit from Sony. This contest has the participation of more than 550 photographers from 65 countries and territories.

Author Nguyen Phuc Thanh with the work “Bicycles and flowers” taken on the ceramic road in Hanoi , won the first prize for the national prize. “I spend the weekend following street vendors and watching them walk and cycle back and forth all day to take pictures. This is one of my favorite moments,” the photographer shared.

Metha Meiryna, an Indonesian photographer won the award for the photo “Rejang dance”. According to Metha, in Bali, dancing is an important tradition in religious ceremonies. One of the most beautiful dances is Rejang. Young girls will wear beautiful clothes and hats decorated with flowers to dance in the courtyard of the temple. Rejang is also a sacred dance, performed to please the gods.

Japanese photographer Kaoru Sugiyama won SWA’s national award for this unnamed photo of many people watching the full moon on the rooftop of a building. “In Japan, celebrating the beauty of the full moon is a popular leisure activity called Tsukimi
(meaning moon-watching),” says Kaoru.

The work captures the streets of Bangkok with the highlight at the end of the road is the Buddha Dhammakaya Thep Mongkol statue by Kunuch Chutmongkolporn. Photo was taken using tilt-shift technique, a genre of photography that makes objects in the image shrink like a toy model.

Yawar Abbas brought the national photo award to Pakistan with the work “Golden Snake”. The photo captures a frame of golden afternoon sunlight on the sand dunes of Skardu. This is a city, nature and trekking destination in the Gilgit−Baltistan region, Pakistan.

Chin Leong Teo, a Singaporean photographer won the prize for “Sumo Wrestling”. Sumo is both a martial art and a traditional Japanese ritual.
