Travel blogger Ma Coc Tu (real name Ngo Tran Hai An) recently made a series of photos of the tombs of the Nguyen Dynasty kings, with Tu Forbidden City and Nam Giao Altar in Hue. The project is to capture the image of the tombs of the Nguyen dynasties from an aerial perspective. The photo set includes all the mausoleums, except the tombs of King Bao Dai and Ham Nghi, which are both buried abroad.

Lang Gia Long or Thien Tho Lang is located in Dinh Mon village, Huong Tho commune, Huong Tra district, about 20 km west of Hue city center. This is the burial place of King Gia Long named Nguyen Phuc Anh (1762-1820), the founding king of the Nguyen Dynasty of Vietnam and in position from 1802 until his death. 

The special thing about Gia Long mausoleum is that the center of the mausoleum has the tomb of King Gia Long and Queen Thua Thien Cao, the wife who has always been with him through many tribulations. Two stone graves next to each other show a beautiful image of happiness and loyalty.

Tomb of Minh Mang or Hieu Lang, located in Cam Khe mountain, near the confluence of Bang Lang (the confluence of two streams Huu Trach, Ta Trach forming Huong River), 12 km from Hue City. The mausoleum is the burial place of King Minh Mang, the name Thuy Nguyen Phuc Dam (1791 – 1841) he was in office from 1820 until his death. 

This work was built 3 years (1840 – 1843) and needed 10,000 workers and new soldiers to complete. The mausoleum is surrounded by green trees, tranquil lakes and solid mountains.

Thieu Tri mausoleum or Xuong Lang is the burial place of King Thieu Tri. The work is located in the ancient capital of Hue and has been recognized as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO in 1993. The mausoleum is leaning against Thuan Dao mountain, Cu Chanh village, Thuy Bang commune, Huong Thuy district, far from the city center. Hue is about 8 km. This is the only mausoleum facing the Northwest, the direction rarely used in the architecture of mausoleums, Nguyen palaces.

Tomb of Tu Duc or Khiem Cung is located in a narrow valley in Thuong Ba village, Thuy Xuan ward, Hue city. The mausoleum has sophisticated architecture, charming scenery and is one of the most beautiful tombs of the Nguyen Dynasty.

King Tu Duc named Nguyen Phuc Hong Nham (1829 – 1883) ascended the throne in 1847 and remained in office for 36 years until his death. He is the 4th king who is also the longest ruler of the Nguyen Dynasty.

In the compound of Tu Duc mausoleum is also the tomb of Kien Phuc , the 7th king of the Nguyen Dynasty. Kien Phuc is the grandchildren adopted by King Tu Duc and ascended the throne in December 1883 after King Duc Duc and Hiep Hoa.

The campus of Duc Duc mausoleum is viewed from above. Duc Duc mausoleum is also known as An Lang, the burial place of King Duc Duc, the 5th king of the Nguyen Dynasty. The tomb is currently in An Cuu ward, Hue city, less than 2 km from the city center. 

The area of ​​the mausoleum is nearly 6 hectares wide, including the tomb of King Duc Duc, the queen and 42 are imbued with the tombs of the prince and the queen and 121 land tombs of the people of the Quaternary of the Nguyen Phuoc clan (legal system of King Duc Duc). In which An Lang is located in the center and 1 hectare wide.

King Duc Duc named Thuy Nguyen Phuc Ung Ai (1852 – 1883) was in office for only 3 days, and was eliminated. Then, Thanh Thai, the son of King Duc Duc, ascended the throne in 1889 as the 10th king of the Nguyen dynasty. In 1907, he built An Lang for his father properly. Later, this tomb was also the burial place of King Thanh Thai and King Duy Tan (the 11th king).

Hiep Hoa’s mausoleum is the burial place of King Hiep Hoa named Nguyen Phuc Hong Dat (1847 – 1883), one of the saddest kings in Vietnamese history. His grave had been forgotten for a very long time. Hiep Hoa is the second son of King Thieu Tri, he ascended the throne at the age of 37 at the age of only 4 months and is the sixth king of the Nguyen Dynasty. Hiep Hoa’s mausoleum is located in a deserted pine forest in An Tay ward, Hue city.

After 130 years, in August 2013, Hiep Hoa mausoleum was restored by the people according to the architecture of the Nguyen Dynasty. Because of the new project, Hiep Hoa mausoleum is not part of the ancient capital complex of Hue, and not many tourists know it.

Tomb of Dong Khanh , located in the complex of ancient capital Hue, is the burial place of King Dong Khanh. The project is located in the middle of a countryside now Thuong Hai village, Xuan Thuy ward, Hue city.

King Dong Khanh (1864 – 1889) was in office from 1885 – 1889, the name Huy Nguyen Phuc Ung Duong was the ninth king of the Nguyen Dynasty. Emperor Dong Khanh’s mausoleum brings traditional feudal architecture and the influence of Western European architecture.

Dong Khanh mausoleum is also the burial place for King Ham Nghi’s tomb (1874-1944). King Ham Nghi died on January 4, 1944 while in exile in the Algerian capital, in 1965 the body was brought to France for burial. Finally, in 2008, the body was brought to Hue for burial.

Khai Dinh mausoleum is the burial place of King Khai Dinh, the 12th king of Nguyen Dynasty, located in Thuy Bang commune, Huong Thuy direction. Mausoleum was built in 1920 and lasted for 11 years (to 1931) to complete. Compared with the predecessor tombs of Khai Dinh, the tomb is modest but extremely meticulous and time-consuming, due to the use of ceramics, glass, tiles, etc., all from abroad.

As the most “modern” king of the Nguyen Dynasty, the tomb of King Khai Dinh also clearly shows the influence of foreign architectural schools such as India, France … Entering the tomb, visitors will see the interference of literature. East-West chemistry, reflecting the king’s lavish preferences during his life.
