QUANG NAM – Loc Yen Village, Tien Canh Commune, Tien Phuoc District preserves 8 exquisitely carved old houses dating back more than 150 years.

Loc Yen ancient village is about 40 km southwest of the provincial capital of Quang Nam. The village was formed and developed in the 15-16 century with wooden houses, stone alleys, tea boats and green orchards. Up to now, after 7 generations, Loc Yen village has many families living together in harmony.

The village has a total area of ​​279 hectares, houses leaning on the mountain, the front facing the rice fields is very airy. In September 2019, Loc Yen was ranked a National Monument and one of the four most beautiful ancient villages in Vietnam.

Around the old house is planted with fruit trees to create a green space. It has a cool climate all year round, so the trees alternately bloom and bear fruit.

Loc Yen also preserves 8 old houses made of jackfruit wood with three compartments, two wings in the style of a communal house dating from 80 years to 150 years. Ancient houses are considered as a complex of high artistic value.

Inside the old house of Mr. Dong Viet Mao, 82 years old. According to the owner, the house was built more than 150 years ago, before that with thatched roof, in 1981 replaced with new tile. “Decorative items such as worship cabinets are inlaid with pearls; worship items such as vases, incense burners, jars, incense sticks, plaques … made of wood and copper, lacquered, inlaid nacre from Chau O, Quang Ngai “, Mr. Mao said.

The hamlet with the image of a pumpkin in the middle of Mr. Mao’s house with full wishes. The skillful carvings on wooden structures in the house are made by talented craftsmen of Van Ha carpentry village, now in Tam Thanh commune, Phu Ninh district.

Loc Yen also preserves a “treasure” which is a mysterious self-rotating table created by the carpentry village artist Van Ha.

Visitors are introduced to a table surface with a diameter of about 80 cm, if visitors put their hands up on the table and unanimously mind which direction it rotates on its own, the table surface slowly rotates. If everyone kept their hands and walked in the rotation of the table, it would move faster in that direction. 

When someone shouted “stop” it immediately stopped … The table would rotate in the opposite direction when everyone turned their hands up. However, not all of the tests have been successful.

Tourists step down to the old houses, the two sides of mossy alley covered with green color.

Located in the hilly terrain, since ancient times, people used rocks to arrange the two sides of the lane, the fence around the garden became a flat embankment. This method is to keep the soil bank from being eroded and washed away by floods, dividing the boundaries of interconnected gardens.

Both sides of the lane are planted with Chinese tea. People prune beautifully, around there are fruit trees to create shade.

Around the village using rocks separating the village from the winding fields, this is a walking path for visitors to visit.

In 2017, the People’s Committee of Quang Nam province agreed to allow Tien Phuoc district to implement the project “Development of garden economy, farm economy, ecotourism characterized by the midland region of Quang”. The government supports people to make stone alleys and grow flowers to create more landscapes for tourism.

In this village, most of the villagers’ gardens are planted with birch trees. From August on the lunar calendar, visitors come to visit and enjoy.

Fruit grows in branches in clusters, it is said that when the Tay Son army chased away, Nguyen Anh followed Lord Nguyen Phuc Thuan and fled to Quang Nam. In the days of hiding in the upstream of Vu Gia river, Lord Nguyen’s army ran out of food, had to go to the forest to pick fruit and eat sweet and delicious fruit, to eat it to quench the hunger. According to some documents, people then brought the fruit to the King when the season came.

In addition, mulberry trees are grown in this land. This tree is woody, 10-20 m high. The fruit grows on the trunk and some large branches, red or yellow when ripe. Berries have a sweet and sour taste and are rich in polyphenols and anthocyanes, two types of antioxidants important for the body.
