HANOI – On sunny days, peach growers in Nhat Tan pluck the leaves and put them in pots to let the flowers bloom in time for Tet Giap Thin.
More than two months before Tet Giap Thin, peach orchard owners in Nhat Tan (Tay Ho district) are preparing to hire people to pluck leaves and pot the trees. There is only one crop per year, so the time of plucking leaves is considered important, determining the right flowering time.
In Nhat Tan, there are many types of peaches such as: flanged peaches, faded peaches, white peaches, bud peaches, that lon peaches… with more than 700 households attached to the profession.
“My family has 600 peach trees, usually the leaves are plucked 55-60 days before Tet. Seven people work continuously for 20 days to finish. When it’s hot, the leaves are plucked 2 to 5 days later, when it’s cold, the leaves are plucked. leaves earlier,” said Ms. Ngan, 63 years old, peach orchard owner.
According to Ms. Ngan, plucking leaves allows the plant to concentrate on nutrients, making the buds even and abundant, and the flowers will bloom with big, thick, beautiful-colored petals. Sunny weather is the most suitable for plucking leaves because at this time the leaves are crispy and pluck faster.
At this time, families who grow many perennial peach trees and valuable peach trees have to hire more people to take care of them and move them, the daily wage is about 400,000 – 500,000 VND per person depending on the specific job.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Duc, 66 years old (right corner) said his family has two peach gardens, in Nhat Tan and Chem (Bac Tu Liem district) with 1,300 trees.
“Before the day of plucking leaves, large, perennial trees will be transferred to pots, then taken to an area 3 km away from the garden for care and sale. Every year I only sell 2/3 of the peaches, the rest is for maintenance. trees for sale next season,” Mr. Duc said.

The peach trees are planted outside on the mudflats, and the garden owner hires people to transport them home in improved vehicles or trucks for convenient care. Most peach trees have a lifespan of more than 5 years.
Peach growing is a traditional profession of Nhat Tan people. In the years 1990-1995, the field land area of this ward was only about 34 hectares. After 1998, people moved to the Red River beach to grow peach trees and have since grown to about 57 hectares.
