HCMC– Mr. Pham Huu Trong, 29 years old, spent 100 million VND to renovate the balcony and terrace of his boarding house into a two-story ornamental garden.

In 2021, Trong rented a room on Ba Thang Hai Street, District 10. In addition to the room, he could use the balcony and terrace space, a place to store old and damp things. The boy from Ben Tre is a farmer and loves growing plants, so he started renovating.

Trống asked the innkeeper’s permission, bought the supplies and carried them up three flights of stairs. The balcony area is 30 m2, the same area as the terrace. He cleaned the floor and planted common plants such as cacti, butterfly beans, and roses. During the Covid-19 epidemic, Trong stayed at home and researched growing 90 more species of ornamental leaves in about 200 pots.

In three years, he spent about 100 million on his hobby of growing trees. The most expensive ornamental plant is philodendron radiatum var priced at 10 million, purchased in 2022.

In the beginning, without experience, the ornamental plants he planted such as philodendron gloriosum, montera deliciosa, anthurium vitta had leaf burn during the season. dry.

“Foliage bonsai only needs basic soil but must have good drainage”, he learned from experience. This plant needs diffused light, which means installing an orchid net. Trong also learned about arranging a misting system to keep the plants moist.

Mutant ornamental plants are the most difficult species to care for due to their weaker constitution than normal species. However, mutant ornamental plants have leaf sizes of 80-90 cm and many colors. Trong usually spends one to two hours a day taking care of the plants.

Two years ago, the price of mutant trees was quite expensive, from 8-10 million, after discounts according to market conditions.

Having experience in the design industry, Trong arranges ornamental leaves in layers from low to high, helping the tree receive sunlight and have good humidity. He created a connection between the balcony space and the rooftop with vines and growing creeping plants close to the ground.

The terrace is a place to grow sun-tolerant species such as ornamental plants and ornamental banana species such as florida, red tiger and ruby.

From the terrace’s perspective, the inn’s garden has 95% of ornamental species, placed closely to create a feeling of lushness like a jungle.

After gaining a lot of experience, he switched to self-propagating leafy ornamental species such as philodendron ataba, glorious, gloriosum, dragon and plants monstera.

The garden is a place for Trong to relax after a working day. He said people often do not have the habit of investing in rental space. Trong thinks the opposite, he spends effort and money on the garden even if he has to move later.

“Green trees make me feel closer to home than a motel room,” he said.
