Fennel with bright yellow flowers is planted from about October of the lunar calendar, until March of next year, it is possible to harvest seeds. Growers who spend “one capital” can get “ten profits”.
After each Lunar New Year, many dill gardens in Vinh Trach Dong commune (Bac Lieu city, Bac Lieu province) flowers begin to bloom. The flowers of this tree have a beautiful bright yellow color, attracting many people to visit and take pictures.
Cultivation of fennel is also one of the occupations that bring in good income for many households in the coastal commune of Bac Lieu for many years.
Mr. Lam Duyen (37 years old, living in Vinh Trach Dong commune) said that he has 2 public lands (about 1,000m2/public) to grow dill.
“This plant is quite easy to grow, easy to care for, but it also requires new techniques to ensure the tree is always fresh,” Duyen said.
According to Mr. Duyen, fennel is grown from seeds, on high ground that is not flooded. It can be planted in beds for easy care and irrigation. This plant does not require a lot of money and care.
“The dill season starts from about October of the lunar calendar to sow, to about March of the next lunar year, it is harvested. My two public lands for growing dill are from seed, fertilizer, medicine … only capital is about 2-3 million dong for the whole case,” Duyen shared.
When harvesting, Mr. Duyen hires people or mobilizes family members to cut trees and then smack and stomp the seeds.
“The fennel seeds I sell at the highest time is about 70,000 VND – 80,000 VND/kg. The average harvest of two lands is 400 – 500kg. Thus, one crop I can sell about 30 million VND, while the capital has not been spent yet. up to 5 million dong, my profit is over 20 million dong,” Duyen said.
Along with growing dill like Duyen, Huynh Linh (46 years old, living in Vinh Trach Dong commune) has more than 2,000m2 of land specialized in cultivating this plant.
According to Mr. Linh, his capital is about 5-6 million VND for a season of dill. “Last year, I harvested 600kg of seeds, priced at 50,000 VND / kg, I earned more than 30 million VND, more than half of the profit”, Mr. Linh said.
Those who grow fennel say that cultivating this plant is very profitable when “investing one capital, profit to ten”. However, it is difficult to do only one crop per year in the dry season, the time to harvest is quite long. This seasonal job partly contributes to additional income, helping people have more income after the Lunar New Year to cover and stabilize their lives.
