BAC GIANG – Vinh Nghiem pagoda which existed since the Ly dynasty was awarded by UNESCO with the recognition of 3,000 woodblocks in the pagoda as a world heritage documentary and memory…

History In Bac Giang and many localities, there is still a saying:

“The first is Duc La pagoda,

“Monday, Bon pagoda, Tuesday, Trang pagoda.”

Previously, Vinh Nghiem pagoda was in Duc La commune, Tri Yen district, Lang Giang district, now Duc La village, Tri Yen commune, Yen Dung district, Bac Giang province, so it was called Duc La pagoda and the festival here was called La festival.

Vinh Nghiem Pagoda is located at the confluence of Luc Nam and Thuong rivers (called Phuong Nhan confluence). The pagoda overlooks the confluence of the river, towards Luc Dau Giang – Kiep Bac, the Cam Ly area, the gateway to Yen Tu mountain. Surrounding the pagoda are mountains, including Co Tien mountain. Across the river is the royal palace of Tran Hung Dao, Kiep Bac temple.

The epitaph of the Tran dynasty wrote: “Duc To Dieu Ngu Phap Loa opened this forest, and also opened Duc La market. The princes like and cross the Viet Nam, develop their mind to buy land in the village and other counties in other places, to offer incense to offer the three jewels forever. This pagoda and Sung Nghiem pagoda have a total of 72 secluded places with creative merit, carved into stele at Hoa Nghiem pagoda, Yen Tu mountain. Another built stele reads: “Duc to Dieu Ngu (ie Tran Nhan Tong) when he opened this forest (ie Vinh Nghiem pagoda), the whole pagoda market was opened. The monarchs liked the kingdom and the visitors from all directions had invested in many fields to worship the temple, including fields in the commune and fields in other counties.

Legend has it that Vinh Nghiem pagoda dates back to the beginning of Ly Thai To dynasty (1010-1028), its literal name is Vinh Nghiem Tu (永 嚴 寺). During the reign of King Tran Thanh Tong, all monks were religious, so they were made magnificent and magnificent. When King Tran Nhan Tong abandoned his throne to become a monk to Vinh Nghiem pagoda, Ngoa Van pagoda (Yen Tu) was ordained, took the title of Huong Van Dai Dau Da, founded Zen Buddhism sect of Vietnamese Buddhism. Huong Van and two disciples Phap Loa, Huyen Quang founded and completed the Vietnamese Zen Buddhism sect called Tam To.

Ngua Van pagoda was formerly presided over by Hien Quang monk. When Hien Quang passed away, he no longer existed. Because Yen Tu is the homeland of the Tran dynasty and where King Tran Thai Tong founded the Truc Lam sect here, Huong Van Tran Nhan Tong ordained both Vinh Nghiem pagoda and here. Phap Loa was taught the dharma by Mr. Huong Van and gave lectures everywhere, teaching the set of “Zen Uyen Truyen Dang Luc”. When Huong Van passed away, Phap Loa held a cremation ceremony, built a tomb tower on Yen Tu mountain, offered the title “Dai Thanh Tran Trieu Truc Lam Dau Da Tinh Tue Giac Hoang Dieu Ngu To Phat” called Truc Lam the First. . Then Phap Loa returned to Vinh Nghiem pagoda, abbot, built this place into a Buddhist center, trained monks and arranged monks and directed pagodas throughout the country. Phap Loa casted 1,300 statues, which were in charge of monks and nuns, and had more than 15,000 monks and nuns, of whom more than 3,000 obtained the dharma, opening 200 facilities … For re-composing the books “The Book of Luc, Tham Meditation, Weak Chi”. In 1330, Phap Loa handed over to Huyen Quang to go to Quynh Lam Pagoda, a few months later he passed away, was conferred the title of “Tinh Chi Ton Gia”, became the second Truc Lam.

About Huyen Quang, a native of Van Download village belonged to Vu Ninh (Bac Ninh), the son of Ly On Hoa (a mandarin of Ly Than Tong dynasty), passed Poinsettia in the Tran dynasty. While still working as a mandarin, Huyen Quang offered to come to Vinh Nghiem pagoda to meet Phap Loa to teach the teachings, thus awakening, and when he returned to the court, he offered two expressions from the mandarin, assigned by Huong Van to the abbot of Vinh Nghiem pagoda. Huyen Quang has composed a series of large books: Chu Pham Kinh, Cong Van Tap, printed Buddhist scriptures, distributed to the poor, passed away in 1334, and awarded the title “Truc Lam the Third Great Tu Phap Huyen Quang Ton Gia” , became the third Truc Lam. Thus, before Huong Van came to Yen Tu, Phap Loa came to Quynh Lam pagoda, they were abbots at Vinh Nghiem pagoda. All three of the Three To Truc Lam: Huong Van (The First To), Phap Loa (The Second To) and Huyen Quang (The Third To) all took Vinh Nghiem pagoda as the teaching center. The current, in the First Patriarch’s house there are three statues of Truc Lam Tam To: in the examination is the statue of Huong Van Tran Nhan Tong, the outside is the statue of Phap Loa and the statue of Huyen Quang. This place was the ancestral land of Buddhism in the Tran dynasty, trained many monks.

Later, a number of monks from the North to Saigon built a second Vinh Nghien pagoda at 339, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, Ward 7, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City. This is a very famous temple in Vietnam. Currently, this temple is more famous than the original temple – Pagoda Vinh Nghiem (Bac Giang).

Architecture

Vinh Nghiem Pagoda has a large scale, located on a land of about 1 hectare, surrounded by dense bamboo. The pagoda is structured on an axis, in the southeast direction, consists of 4 blocks: the Heavenly Hall, the Upper Palace, the First Patriarch’s House, the bell tower, the second ancestor’s house and a number of other works. At the beginning is the three-door gate built with bricks, then going in more than 100 meters is Bai Duong (Ho pagoda). Since the day of the pagoda’s construction, the two sides of the road were planted with pine trees to become a place of coniferous forest, with trees nearly 1 meter in diameter. On the pagoda yard there is a large stele, 6 sides, built in the 7th year of Hoang Dinh (1606) with the content recording the restoration of the pagoda that year. Opposite to the ancient stele is the tomb garden in which there are 5 famous monks: Phu Lang Trung Phap (Sa Mon brand), Thong Du Duy Duyen, Thanh Quy, Tinh Phuong Sa Mon, Thanh Hanh and some other towers.

The first block has the “Cong” (工) typeface consisting of Bai Duong, Thieu Huong and Thuong Dien with spacious design with seven-way, leaf-blade, 4-blade 8-raft roof type of husband, upper three lower four. Outside the pagoda, there is an embossed “masonry” line in the shape of a letter with three letters in the shape of the century, decorated with epistles, flowers and leaves running around the border. Thieu Huong’s interior is lavishly decorated and carved. In the three folds of the pagoda, there are hammock doors, carvings of flowers and birds, delicate and sophisticated motifs painted with golden lipstick, on top of large galleries.

The second block also follows the public typeface but is lower and smaller. This is the First Patriarch’s house to worship To Huong Van Tran Nhan Tong. In the First Court, there is a statue of the queen placed outside, 2 side spaces. The three Truc Lam nests are located in the harem, above there is a diaphragm “Truc Lam Hoi Thuong”.

The third block is a bell tower with 2 floors and 8 roofs, hanging a large bell. The structure of the bell floor is a combination of wooden and brick structures, in the middle of the four heads are hung small bronze bells (wind chimes).
The fourth block, the nail-shaped structure (丁), is the Second Patriarch’s house to worship To Phap Loa.

Previously, the two sides also had rows of Ta vu and Huu Vu houses, each row of 18 spacious pavilions was the place for monks to settle down, and the auxiliary architectures serving daily activities of monks and nuns and Buddhas. death.
