In the early morning of May, Mr. Vo Van Thanh, 28 years old, went to the water lily pond in the garden to cut old leaves to make room for the plants to grow and clean the lake. This is the job he has been working for the past two years.
Graduating in geology from Hue University of Science in 2017, Mr. Thanh works for a company in Da Nang city with a monthly salary of 15 million VND. In 2020, the Covid-19 epidemic, so he stayed at home, looking for business ideas.
Following a person in Thua Thien Hue, Mr. Thanh invested more than 100 million VND to buy canvas to line the 600 m2 home garden to grow water lilies. He divided into many lakes, each lake is about 30-50 m2 wide.
Mr. Thanh buys seedlings from Thailand and Australia. Thai water lily flowers all year round, while Australian water lily grows from March to November.
Thanh’s journey with the gun has never been easy. “Once I bought flowers from Thailand for more than 10 million VND, but it took 2 weeks to ship, so I died,” Thanh said. Or the time he took water from a pond that was contaminated with alum, the water lilies planted there died. To overcome this, he drilled a well more than 30 meters to get water.
An imported variety is planted in a pot. Each bulb will sprout 2-10 sprouts. About half a month, Mr. Thanh will split the tree, at this time the tree is 20 cm high, with roots and standing leaves.
Initially, the plant is planted in a pot with a diameter of 10 cm, after 2 weeks will be transferred to a large pot with a diameter of 50 cm. On average, after 1.5 months, the water lily will flower.
In addition to imported varieties, Mr. Thanh also bred himself. He took the flower pollen and mixed it with water, then spread it on the flowers of other plants.
The hassabadin-like gun costs 15 million dong, the tuber alone costs 5 million dong. This type is the most expensive in Mr. Thanh’s garden.
In addition to selling flower seeds, Mr. Thanh also sells flowers at 5,000 VND each. Currently, Mr. Thanh owns a 1,000-square-meter gun garden with 20 imported varieties and more than 30 self-breeding varieties.
The guns were uprooted and sold. “Every month, I sell thousands of trees, the price fluctuates from 150,000 VND to 15 million VND, minus the average monthly cost of 50 million VND,” said the gardener.
The water lily is put in a foam box and sent to the courier to be sent to the customer. “Goods are sold by me online, in addition to the domestic market, many foreigners come to the garden to buy,” the garden owner said. He is contacting the commune government to rent 2,000 m2 of land to expand the area.
