NGHE AN – Nearly 250 households in Tru Son commune (Do Luong district) follow the profession of making clay pots. In peak months, they can produce tens of thousands of units and earn an income of 5 to 7 million VND per person.

Villagers 6 and 7 (Tru Son commune) have a long tradition of making clay pots. The product is used to store fish, decoction, cook rice… with many different models and sizes, but the most common is the 25 – 30 cm pot, the mouth diameter is about 20 cm.

With about 250 households, nearly 500 people regularly work as clay pot, this is considered the “capital” of the clay pot of Nghe.

The soil suitable for making pots is clay available in nature. People bring them home, they will wet them and then put them into small cutters.

After finishing the grinding process, the pot is left to dry in the sun for 1 to 3 days.

People usually work in the household. If the weather is sunny, in 3 to 5 days, 300 to 400 pots will be placed in the oven to bake once.

The earthenware kiln is more than one meter high and about 2 meters wide. Continuous burning time of 3 to 4 hours with straw and firewood.

Finished baked products are placed in piles waiting to be sold. The cost of each unit depends on the size and distance of transportation. In which, the cheapest type is sold at the oven with an average price of 10,000 to 20,000 VND/piece.

If selling in a nearby area, the trader or the owner of the kiln transports it by bicycle. For places far away and outside the province, they transport by car.

A corner of hamlet 6 (Tru Son commune) where hundreds of families make pots. Mr. Nguyen Thuy Chinh, Chairman of Tru Son commune, said that in the past 5 years, this profession has developed quite well because consumers have used products more than before.

“On average, a person has an income of 5-7 million VND/month.
