Old City Gate (Dong Ha umbrella) is the only surviving doorway of the ancient Thang Long citadel. Today, this is a popular tourist attraction for visitors to learn about Hanoi’s history and culture.
The ancient citadel of Thang Long had 5 famous gates, respectively: Cau Giay, Cau Den, Dong Mac, Cho Dua and Quan Chuong . At that time, the citadel system, mausoleums and temples were built on a very large scale, but through many historical events and time, the vestiges of the old capital were almost destroyed, so far only still Gate remains with bold markers of an old Hanoi.

Quan Chuong is also known as Dong Ha cell, its name is Dong Ha Mon (東河 門, or Dong Ha ward), built from about 1749 to 1817, located on the east side of the castle land surrounding the Citadel. Materials for the construction of this work are mallet bricks and large-sized stones, similar to the wall bricks in Van Mieu Quoc Tu Giam.

At present, this Hanoi doorway still retains its original architecture, that is, the typical aspiration principle of the Nguyen Dynasty at that time. The cell has 2 floors: 1st floor has 1 main door and 2 side doors, 2nd floor has 4-storey roof, 3rd floor is roof. The small doors with rolling roof, gazebo on the 2nd floor project the corner predicate of the main door, decorated hexagonal, quadrilateral and asteroid. This is a site that was once guarded and tightly controlled to keep the entire shopping district inside. In addition, on the left wall of the main door, there is a stone stele inscribing a ban on the gate keeper not to harass the people every time they pass by, placed in 1881 by Governor Hoang Dieu.門 means “DONG HA MON”.
