DAK LAK – Cung is a tiny person with a height of 90 cm. Chien and Lan plan to stay in the same house without getting married, until the child is born.

In a small house in Krong Buk commune, Krong Pak district, Ms. Hoang Lan and her 10-month-old son lie in a peaceful green hammock. The mother’s height is only less than 30 cm higher than the child’s, so it is easy for strangers to mistake them for two children.

Trinh Van Chien, her husband had just returned from the market, gently took off his slippers and asked his wife: “Have you slept long?”. “Just now, let me sleep,” replied the sister-in-law. The two did not say anything more, sitting contemplatively looking at the child – the unexpected gift that they never dared to dream of.

In the same house in Krong Buk commune, 33 years ago Chien was born. At the age of four, the boy could talk but was still lying in one place while the other three siblings were normal. At the age of 7, Chien began to practice standing and walking. Thinking that they could not take care of a sick child, Trinh Van Huu and his wife were surprised when their child asked to go to school, at the age of 11.

“Before taking my son to school, I told him that he was small, but his limbs were healthy, he had a normal mind, there was no need to be self-deprecating,” Mr. Huu said. Listening to his father’s instructions, Chien carefree made friends, did not care about the eyes of the people around him, despite from then to adulthood, his height stopped at 90 cm, weighing 20 kg.

When Chien studied in high school, the electric tricycle could not travel 15 km, Mr. Huu used a motorbike to pull his son’s car to school and rented a house. On weekends, he rides his motorbike to pull back. After graduating from high school, his son went to Ho Chi Minh City alone to study college, majoring in information technology.

Four years ago, Chien worked for a company specializing in handicrafts for the disabled. The boy was attracted to a girl named Lan, whose height was only slightly higher than me.

Pepper is the same, so Chien and Lan quickly get along. After a few times driving each other around Saigon, roaming in Da Lat on a tricycle… they became a couple. After dating for four years, Chien followed Lan to her hometown in Ninh Thuan to meet her parents.

“We are small, but like everyone else, we want to love and have a home,” the young man asked for permission from the adults in the house. Both families agree. Deep down, the couple and their loved ones both think they can’t have children.

No wedding, no marriage registration, the two moved in together in a 15 m2 motel room in Thu Duc. The two people’s inheritance in addition to a few personal belongings, they bought more plastic chairs to stand while cooking, put things in the wardrobe. Both also moved to work at a camera surveillance company.

Living together for more than four months, Lan vomited and was tired. “I was both happy and worried when the pregnancy test showed only two lines. We just wished we had someone to keep us company, we didn’t expect God to give us a child,” the young mother was emotional.

Mr. Huu, when he heard the news, immediately called Lan’s parents. Two families from the countryside came to Ho Chi Minh City, sitting together to discuss a hundred years for the young couple. Everyone also took Lan to the hospital, rest assured to keep the pregnancy when consulted by the doctor.

Knowing that they would be parents, Chien and his wife bought a new shirt and lifted it up and put it down. In addition to thrifty spending, he sells cards, phone sim cards, and Chien’s wife sells cosmetics on social networks to earn extra income.

Ten months ago, Chien’s son Nhat An, Ms. Lan, was born, weighing only 1.2 kg due to lack of months. “The day the doctor took my child out to see, I had mixed feelings in my heart. Both love and happiness for the little child, being a father,” said Mr. Chien. In the first five months of life, Nhat An was almost always hospitalized. The child underwent two surgeries due to infection, at one time survival was only one percent.

“It was not only a difficult time for the children, but also for both sides of the family. Fortunately, the children were always strong to face challenges”, Mr. Huu said. During the days when I was at the hospital, my grandfather from Dak Lak, my grandmother from Ninh Thuan, went to Ho Chi Minh City to help my children.

After months at the hospital, baby Nhat An crossed the death door to her parents’ arms. In the 10th month, Nhat An learned to walk, babble. Every time he saw his child walking, Chien’s heart was restored: “He knows that his parents are small, so he should be strong”.

Not only the sick child, but the pandemic also made the life of the tiny couple much disturbed. As the mainstay, but Chien has also been unemployed since July. During the days stuck in Ho Chi Minh City, they had to live on the support of the community and subsidies from the State. “Difficulties also help us grow up and live more responsibly with ourselves and with our children,” Lan said.
