Households grow at least 5 hectares of oranges, the most households up to more than ten hectares (hectares), prices range from 30,000 to 50,000 VND/kg. Dong Thanh orange trees not only help people alleviate poverty but also become a key crop to help many families get rich in their homeland. 

Taking guests to visit the family’s orange orchard, Mr. Truong Van Bien (SN 1958, residing in Dong Thanh commune) said: “In the past, this land was very barren, because of the steep slope, people mainly planted forest trees. However, investing in forest trees requires high costs, lack of output, and volatile prices… so we changed the purpose of crops.”

Dong Thanh oranges meet VietGap standards, reaching out to the nationwide consumption market.

“Thanks to learning some local orange growing models and applying science and technology, my family started planting orange varieties in Doai commune in 2016, on an area of ​​more than 5 hectares. The average yield of each crop is 100 – 120 tons, minus the profit cost of about 2 billion dongs, creating jobs for dozens of workers and increasing income for my family, so I’m very happy. In the coming time, we will continue to expand the area of ​​orange cultivation for economic development”, Mr. Bien added.

 Mr. Nguyen Dinh An (SN 1974, owner of An – Thom orange farm in Dong Thanh commune) with more than 2 hectares of oranges is also preparing for the harvest season. Thanks to the care techniques, thousands of fruit-heavy farm’s orange trees have turned golden yellow, looking very eye-catching.

“It is expected that this crop will yield 30 tons of oranges and earn about one billion dongs. This is the second high-yielding crop, so we are very excited,” said Mr. An happily.

To avoid insects, people have netted oranges.

Yellow oranges in Doai commune have taken root in the land of Dong Thanh since 2005 until now, at first it was only at a small and fragmented production level. In 2020, Dong Thanh Orange Cooperative has gathered orange growing households in the area to gather in one place, which is very convenient in production, consumption and management. From 2020 to 2021, 56 hectares of oranges have been granted Vietgap certificates, creating a safe and sustainable agricultural production model.

People also use traps to catch insects instead of using pesticides.

Up to now, in this commune, there are nearly 100 orange-growing households, with a total area of ​​more than 130 hectares. Orange trees bring efficiency, high economic value; In 2021, the output is estimated at 1,400 tons, giving an income of approximately 43 billion VND. Also, every year, the orange garden also creates jobs for 300-400 workers locally.

Mr. Ngo Van Tuan, Chairman of Dong Thanh Commune People’s Committee, said that from barren land, Dong Thanh has now really transformed with immense orange groves, bringing income and enriching people here.

Talking to PV Dan Tri , Mr. Nguyen Van Duong, Vice Chairman of Yen Thanh District People’s Committee (Nghe An) said that Dong Thanh oranges have affirmed their brand, participated in many exhibitions inside and outside the province and been certified by the company. recognized as clean, safe and high-quality oranges according to Vietgap standards.
