Con Son Pagoda, also known as Thien Tu Phuc Tu, is located on Con Son mountain in Chi Linh district of Hai Duong. This famous temple is one of the three great centers of the Truc Lam Zen sect. The pagoda was ranked by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a particularly important national monument in 1994 and is one of the special relics belonging to the Con Son – Kiep Bac mountain relic cluster.

Con Son pagoda was originally a small pagoda called Ky Lan which was built by Phap Loa monk from the 12th year of Hung Long, ie 1304. By the first year of Khai Huu 1329 pagoda was expanded into Con Son Thien Tu Huyen Quang is the abbot. By the time of the Le Dynasty, Con Son pagoda was restored and expanded, at this time the pagoda had 83 rooms and included many different works such as Tam quan, bell floor, drum guard, upper lower house, left right vu … War and time, today Con Son Pagoda is just a small temple nestled under the ancient museums of green.

The unique architecture of the ancient temple of Con Son

Con Son pagoda’s architecture is built in the shape of a Cong shape, including 3 main blocks, namely Tien Duong, Thuong Dien and Thien Huong. The entrance area of ​​the temple gate is tiled and covered with large ancient rows. The three-story gate has two floors with 8 roofs, stylized flower and rattan motifs are intricately carved. The upper temple area of ​​the temple is a place of worshiping Buddha, many statues in this area have a height of more than 3 meters. Most of the Buddha statues in the temple bear the hallmarks of the Le dynasty.

The temple courtyard area has an old tree that is more than 600 years old, in addition to this area there are tombstones written with the words “Thanh Huu”, which are the autographs of King Tran Due Tong when he visited Con Paint. These three characters have a special feature that is written in the Le script, today is one of the precious relics of the temple. Beer is placed on the back of a tortoise, this turtle is polished polished by Buddhists and visitors to the temple still touch for good luck.

The area behind Con Son pagoda was when the tomb tower with Dang Minh stupa placed the statue of Huyen Quang, the emperor who was one of the three founders of the Truc Lam Zen monastery and also the abbot of the pagoda at that time. Huyen Quang is the third ancestor of the Truc Lam Zen sect, when the monk passed away, King Tran Minh Tong built Dang Minh stupa and the date of his death is also the day of the annual Xuan Con Son Festival.

The area at the foot of the stupa Dang Minh is Gieng Ngoc, a tourist attraction that attracts many visitors when coming to Con Son Pagoda, on the side of Ky Lan mountain, Ban Co Tien and famous An Bach Van relic. Con Son stream area is home to Thau Ngoc bridge, one of the destinations that has been recorded in poetry.

The To House area behind Con Son pagoda is home to two special statues, one man and one woman facing the Buddha altar. Legend has it that in the past, the monks and nuns in the temple did not know whose statue it was and since when. 

During the anti-French resistance war for fear of the enemy’s sweeping of the monks and nuns and the teacher brought the hidden statue to the mountain, one day there was a great thunderstorm, the monks went up to the mountain to see the status of the statues and saw two statues. Covering with soil washed away by the rain, revealing a band of affection, it was the statue of famous Nguyen Trai and Nguyen Thi Lo.

Con Son Pagoda is also the place where celebrity Nguyen Trai retreated and lived in the last days of his life. This place has witnessed the last stage of a famous cultural celebrity and national hero. The scenery in Con Son is also the inspiration that made Nguyen Trai compose many poems in the famous Quoc Am Thi Tap anthology.
