For the Year of the Dragon 2024, Mr. Tri made 50 pots of dragon-shaped ornamental kumquats, priced at 5 million VND/pair. Each dragon pot is more than 1 meter in size. The kumquat used to create the mascot shape was planted many months ago and has produced many fruits.

The artist will then use a soldering iron to shape the dragon’s head, body, back and tail, then select strong, fruitful stalks and use zinc to weave them into the frame. To shape the face, workers use painted plastic balls to make the eyes, springs to make the whiskers, and decals to make the horns and mouth. On average, each ornamental dragon over 1m tall takes about 1-2 days to complete.

The “dragon fish” is about 2 meters tall and is composed of 5 to 6 bougainvillea bushes. Then, Mr. Thang added fins, eyes, and mouth to make it more vivid. The tail is still shaped like a fish, but the head is shaped like a dragon. Mr. Thang shared that the part that takes the most effort to create is the animal’s head, it must be at least 80% similar for the mascot to be successful.

According to the garden owner, this year is a leap year so the bougainvillea blooms early, so it is necessary to treat the water carefully so that the bougainvillea blooms in time for Tet when the mascot is even more brilliant.

“I displayed the pots in the garden and people came to see, ask to buy, and bid,” Mr. Thang said.
