Previously, my family grew sugarcane and only earned 20-30 million VND a year, but since planting guava, each year the income is also the same. more than 150 million VND. In the past few years, many people in the commune have switched to growing guava,” Mr. Hien shared.

Next to Mr. Hien’s family’s guava garden, Mr. Mai Van Thang is busy harvesting guavas to sell to traders.

Mr. Thang said that before growing guava and pear, his family used to grow sugarcane and pineapple. In 2020, seeing guava trees growing locally, he boldly converted nearly 1 hectare of sugarcane to plant 1,700 Taiwanese guava trees.

The owner of the guava garden shared that growing guava and pear is not too difficult but must ensure technical skills. If you want the tree to flower and bear fruit in the right season, you must prune old branches, pests, and branches that grow too thick to create ventilation for the guava tree to grow and photosynthesize. Only then will the fruit-bearing rate be high.

According to Mr. Thang, it takes about a year for guava pears to bear fruit, and the harvest time takes place all year round. A guava tree will have a continuous harvest cycle of seven years before having to be replanted. Currently, guava prices are being sold on the market from 6,000 VND to 15,000 VND/kg, depending on the time.

Thanks to proper care processes and techniques, in 2022, Mr. Thang’s family will earn more than 200 million VND, four times higher than growing sugar cane.

Mr. Nguyen Van Le, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ha Long commune, Ha Trung district, said that guava trees have been experimentally planted in this locality since 2018, with an area of 4-5 hectares.
