The H’mong people in the border districts of Ky Son and Tuong Duong, Nghe An province usually eat Tet from January 1 to January 15. In these days, people welcome Spring with endless joy. According to old custom, the pao fruit, also known as “Lu po”, was stitched together with linen into round fruit, the size of an orange, stuffed inside with flax seeds or cotton. Today, to color the pao, Mong girls also use Thai brocade or silk to create softness for the pao. The pao is made from the skillful hands of Mong girls. Young girls ‘pao is usually big, eye-catching and colorful, and teenagers’ pao is simpler, smaller and black. However, nowadays many times the pound has been replaced by a tennis ball for convenience.

Throw the pound hidden in it so many interesting things. Initially, they just played for fun together in groups, then the couple would throw the pao at each other and keep throwing it over and over for hours, every day without getting bored. In the fun, if the girl likes a guy, they will cleverly hide the love through eyes and smiles. As for boys who like a girl, they will keep the pao.

As usual, the people prepared many days ago, at the festival itself, couples, men and women, the age and full moon, throw pounds at each other to find a mate.

The game of throwing pao is a condition for people to meet each other, a place to connect to create conditions for people to sit together to talk and share. Playing pao demonstrates the spirit and identity of the Hmong community. Playing pao is an activity of collectives and Mong communities. Each clan has its own playing field. When Tet and Spring come, boys in the village go to other villages to find girlfriends to play pao. Boys in another version come to play with the girls in themselves …
