NGHE AN – From shade trees, persimmon helps people in Nam Anh commune, Nam Dan district have a good income, each autumn 30-70 million VND if planted 50-100 roots.

In the morning of mid-October, Ms. Bui Thi Thanh, a resident of Nam Anh commune, wore protective clothing, carried an iron ladder, and took a bamboo basket to the hill garden behind her house to pick roses. Her family planted 60 persimmon trees, this crop all produced fruit, each kilogram sold at the garden cost 20,000-30,000 VND, so far nearly 5 quintals of fruit have been sold. It is estimated that at the end of the season, the output will reach one ton and the total income will be about 30 million VND.

Ms. Thanh said that hundreds of years ago, persimmon varieties such as egg, hope, bamboo, fairy, long round… have been grown in Nam Anh, of which egg persimmon is the most popular. The red soil around the Dai Hue mountain range is suitable for tree growth, giving it a characteristic sweet taste. Some places grow egg persimmons, but the fruits are not as delicious as Nam Anh persimmons.

This plant can be grown by two methods, sowing seeds or grafting. Trees from sowing seeds only bear fruit after 5 years, so people often choose grafting. They will take branches from productive persimmon trees and graft them to the mother tree. After 6-7 months, they will separate, dig a hole 50 cm deep, and pour manure down to plant.

After 2 years, trees grown by grafting will produce fruit, and from the fourth year they can be harvested commercially. Pink eggs require little care, only fertilizing once a year. Each tree is 5-7 m high, canopy diameter is 8-10 m, and can yield 3-4 quintals of fruit if the weather is favorable and not damaged by insects. The tree lives for hundreds of years, and the older it gets, the sweeter and fruitier it becomes.

Going to the garden to pick fruit with guests, garden owner Nguyen Dinh Que shared that at the beginning of the year, frost appeared and caused the flowers to drop. In April and August, drought lasted, so persimmon egg production decreased. Fortunately, the price of persimmon is 3,000-5,000 VND per kg higher than last year, so growers are also comforted.

Two months ago, Mr. Que’s family’s garden of more than 50 persimmon eggs had traders ordering all of them. Up to now, they have picked more than 5 quintals. The family is expected to earn a profit of about 40 million VND at the end of the season.

Usually people will harvest the fruit when it is still ripe, then put it in a styrofoam box, put a little soil at the bottom, and put straw on top in layers. After 3-4 days, the fruit will turn crimson. Ripe persimmons will be soft, have red flesh, and have a sweet taste.

Mr. Ho Viet Hoa, Chairman of Nam Anh Commune Farmers’ Association, said that more than 400 families in the commune grow persimmons, with fewer than 5 trees and more than 100. The entire commune has nearly 200 hectares of persimmons, of which 150 hectares are under cultivation. harvest period. Due to unfavorable weather, the commune’s persimmon output reached about 100 tons, down 1/3 compared to last year.

Red eggs help people in Nam Anh have a good income. On average, each family collects 30-50 million VND per crop, many households owning large areas collect 70-80 million VND.

Mr. Nguyen Quy Hieu, Head of Scientific Management Department, Department of Science and Technology of Nghe An province, said that persimmon in Nam Anh commune is a precious tree species, since 2018 the Department has had a project to restore and develop genetic resources. . Up to now, the specialized agency has selected 20 top-line trees to graft for seed production.
