Little Hoi An in a riverside house

On a 280 m2 land along the Thu Bon River, about 1.5 km southeast of the old town, the owner wants a place to live in the spirit of Hoi An but modern.

From the outside, the four-story house looks like a miniature neighborhood. Like the tube houses in Hoi An, the works include the front house, the toilet and the back house.

Based on this structure, the building is divided into three main blocks combined with sub-blocks. In which, the main block corresponds to the bedrooms, the sub-block includes the common living area and the toilet.

The ground floor of the house consists of public spaces and living spaces, connected by the sub-hall and steps.

Public spaces include living room, kitchen and dining room, with glass doors connecting directly to the swimming pool arranged along the house.

The living space is the family bedroom located at the end of the land, separate from the public area and expanded by a wide patio behind.

The homeowner wants the house to have enough room for both family and close friends to stay, so a total of seven bedrooms. All rooms are fully exploited “view” and river wind.

The second and third floors are arranged with three bedrooms on each floor. The rooms are separated by a toilet area and a common living space, to increase privacy, especially in terms of sound.

The balcony awnings are reminiscent of traditional Vietnamese houses, while minimizing sunlight and rain falling on the balcony. The familiar details in the architecture of Hoi An’s houses such as parapets, small doors create intimacy and familiarity.

The low-rise door system, characteristic of Hoi An townhouses, was also included in the project. The bars can be closed, adjusting the wind and privacy level for the space inside.

Curved arches in the interior space are developed from the image of a lantern.

The golden light of Hoi An lanterns makes the space warm and evokes the full moon night of the old town. The contrast between white – black and traditional – modern architectural details gives homeowners a bold Hoi An space but still contemporary.
