HA TINH – Hundreds of people go to the beach in Cuong Gian commune, Nghi Xuan district, collect tons of blood cockles washed ashore by waves, collecting 800,000 to 2 million VND per day.

On the afternoon of December 30, along the coast about 2 km long, passing through Cuong Gian commune, Nghi Xuan district, hundreds of local people brought plastic baskets, plastic lanes, bags, iron racquets attached to nets… pick up blood cockles ashore.

Mr. Pham Van Anh, 50 years old, residing in Cuong Gian commune, said that when his neighbors informed him of “heavenly fortune”, he mobilized his wife and two children to bring the bags to the sea to pick them up. “The scallops live about 7-9 nautical miles from the coast, at a depth of 1.5-2 m, usually appearing in April-June every year. Three days today it has turned cold and the sea is rough, so you can have oysters from offshore. was swept in by high waves and strong rolls,” Anh said.

People squatting on the beach choose live scallops mixed in the sand and put them in plastic baskets and nylon bags. Some fishermen use a 1.7 m long iron racquet, attach a 2 m long net to the sea about 50-70 cm deep to catch more “lucky heavens”, about every 10 minutes they pull a batch. Families go in groups of 2-4 people, take turns washing, sorting.

Around mid-morning and near late afternoon, dozens of traders in the district gathered to collect ice cubes with styrofoam boxes.

“In 3 hours, my family of 3 members picked up 100 kg of blood cockles,” said Mrs. Phan Thi Lanh, 56 years old, living in Cuong Gian commune. In the season, with normal sailing, 100 kg of blood cockles, fishermen have to use boats with a capacity of 60-90 CV to catch from late afternoon to early morning the next morning.

Live cockles are sold to traders at sea for 15,000-20,000 VND/kg. If you take it home, wash it, boil it, prepare it, and bring it to the markets in the retail area, or import it to restaurants and eateries, it’s about 150,000 VND/kg.

If you take advantage of this opportunity, a family of 3-4 members can earn VND 800,000-900,000 a day from catching shellfish ashore. Households with a large number of employees earn more than 2 million VND. “This is a blessing from the sea, everyone is happy and excited, so there is an extra amount to cover,” said one resident.

Mr. Hoang Van Ha, Chairman of Cuong Gian commune, said that since December 28, people have collected tons of blood cockles on the beach. Occasionally this phenomenon occurs in the commune, most recently in October, but the number is less this time.
