From two days before the festival of the God of Fortune on January 10, “grilled snakehead fish street” on Tan Ky Tan Quy street (Tan Phu district) is bustling from morning to night.

At 4 a.m. on February 10, nearly a dozen shops on the red street, staff were busy making coals, grilling fish… and selling them overnight.

In two days, Mr. Nguyen Trung’s shop (middle) was operating at full capacity. He said: “Every year in the God of Tai’s office, I import about 3,000 snakeheads, equivalent to 5 tons at Binh Dien wholesale market,” said the 68-year-old man.

Inside Mr. Trung’s house, thousands of grilled snakehead fish with sugar cane are neatly arranged on the shelves. Employees are busy making vegetables, making fish sauce, preliminary processing fish… Normally, the shop has only a few people, but on this occasion, it has to mobilize nearly 30 people to keep up with market demand.

In the morning, this road is busier, cars constantly stop to ask to buy fish, and smoke fills a corner of the street. The price of grilled snakehead fish, depending on the size, ranges from 170,000-200,000 VND per fish. According to many small traders, this price increased slightly compared to the previous year.

Every year on this day, Ms. Hang, Tan Binh district, buys two grilled fish. “I’m in the beauty business, so worshiping the God of Wealth is very important,” she said.

After guests have finished choosing the fish, they will be added with onion fat, roasted peanuts wrapped in foil, and served with vermicelli. Fish for offerings must be whole, without cutting the fins or scraping off the scales.

Around 8:00 am, the number of buyers is crowded, due to being coincident with rush hour, local congestion occurs on Tan Ky Tan Quy Street.
