HA TINH – Fishermen in the Loc Ha district flock to the sea to catch jellyfish, take home to clean, soak with many kinds of leaves for sale, one day, they collect more than 1.5 million dongs.

These days, the waters of Cua Sot (Loc Ha district) are in the jellyfish season. Along the tens of kilometers long coastline, many groups of fishermen rowing boat, carrying a net more than 200 meters long to the sea about one kilometer away from the shore and dropping into the water to catch fish and jellyfish.

Each group of about two fishermen teamed up to pour many jellyfish caught in the nets onto the sand beach. The jellyfish fishing season takes place from January to April.

Jellyfish live near the shore, rough body with many small spots. This species is rich in nutrients, favored by the market.

Some fishermen used baskets, pans, to pick up jellyfish that were floating on the water, about 300 meters from the shore and put them inside. A live jellyfish weighs from 5 to 50 kg, many weigh 60-70 kg.

“Every day, I go out to sea at 6 o’clock, pull about three batches of jellyfish, at the beginning of the afternoon I take a break. On average, I catch about 5 quintals of jellyfish every day, lucky day 7 quintals, but on a rough day there are no children”, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Do (55 years old, living in Thinh Loc commune, Loc Ha district), said.

Jellyfish are placed in the middle of the sand by the people to remove the oily layers in the lower abdomen, cut the body with a knife to clean the internal organs. A jellyfish weighing 15 kg preliminary processing in 10 minutes.

After finishing the preliminary process, fishermen put jellyfish in a plastic basket and take them to the sea, soak them in the water many times to clear the sand.

At 4:00 p.m. every day, after many hours of buying, traders put jellyfish in a plastic bucket attached to the motorbike and take them home. A living jellyfish weighing 20 kg picked up from the sea and sold it on the spot for 30,000-40,000 VND.

In Son Bang village, Thach Kim commune, Loc Ha district, many families gather human resources to process jellyfish products.

Jellyfish brought back to be washed, people continue to use small knives to remove the greasy layers and organs left, then put on the cutting board to cut into pieces 20 cm long, 10 cm wide and put in a plastic bowl. One ton of jellyfish when cleaned to 500-600 kg.

The cleaned jellyfish is placed in a sponge soaked with salt water to keep it long.

In order to create the finished jellyfish green, the local people use the leaves of dung, myrtle leaves to pick from the mountain, wash them, and put them in the pot of cooking water to soak the jellyfish.

Cold water, simmer leaves are poured water into plastic buckets to have jellyfish inside, and then soaked to turn green. One soak for about 2 hours.

Jellyfish products have two types, jellyfish body sells 30,000 VND per kg, jellyfish is 50,000 VND. “If there is a good day, the family can sell about 50,000 kg of finished jellyfish, earning more than 1.5 million VND”, said Mr. Nguyen Van Chau, from Son Bang village, Thach Kim commune, Loc Ha district, said.
