Stunning at the same time for nearly 1000 years, Chua Dam stone pillar – a still still Ly-era sculpture masterpiece with magical mysteries in need of decoding.
Dam Pagoda was built by King Ly Nhan Tong in 1086 on the slopes of Dai Lam mountain, also known as Dam mountain, looking towards the Duong river, now in Nam Son commune, Que Vo district, Bac Ninh province. Dam Pagoda is known as a great famous Ly Dynasty, a pagoda with 99 superficial spaces with a total area of about 8,400m2. Visiting the pagoda, walking through the trails, the hundred-year-old stone steps, we will admire a famous sculpture: Dam pagoda stone column.

According to researchers, the stone column of Dam pagoda was carved in the 11th century with the word name Lam Son Tu. The stone pillar is no longer intact as before, but still has a unique artistic value of Ly sculpture – the most remarkable sculpture in the history of art in Vietnam.

Small dragon heads are engraved
The stone pillar is placed on a large area outside the temple grounds, one side leaning against Dai Lam mountain, the other facing the east, covering a large space.

The pillar is about 5m high, the bottom has a circular cylinder embossed with a pair of winding dragons: the head rises high towards the shining pearl, the body is wrapped around the column, the tail is intertwined. The special thing is that this pair of dragons are engraved prominently among the intricately carved crocheted flower sub-patterns.
The old well behind the pagoda is associated with the legend of Mrs. Tam.
Perhaps that is why when admiring this sculpture, many people have felt its mystery and holiness. Lam Son Tu brings in himself an imposing quality and a strange mystery.

There is a theory that the stone pillar of Dam Pagoda is a flagpole, there is also the theory that it is the supporting column of the old one-column pagoda.
