Since mid-December 2023, To flowers have bloomed, dyeing the forests, hillsides and every hamlet in Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province.
Toi To flower or “pang ta To” in the Mong language is wild peach blossom, considered one of the winter symbols of Mu Cang Chai. The flowers usually bloom on the occasion of the Mong people’s national New Year celebration, about a month before the traditional Lunar New Year.
The flowers are To with five petals, slimmer and longer than peach blossoms. As the weather gets colder, the pink color of the flowers becomes darker. The best time for flowers is about 10 days from budding. If it is later, the flowers will wither on the branches and the tree will begin to produce buds and leaves.
Arriving at Mu Cang Chai on January 22, Nguyen Tran Hieu, 28 years old, from Ho Chi Minh City, said that To flowers had bloomed on the roads in the center of the district.
The To trees have no leaves, only the pink color of flowers covers the branches and branches. “In the midst of the cold and gloomy landscape of winter days, the deep pink color of hibiscus flowers helps add vitality to the scene,” he said.
The flower is naturally distributed in Mu Cang Chai and grows at an altitude of over 1,000 m above sea level. According to Mr. Vang A Thao, a tour guide in Mu Cang Chai, the To bamboo tree blooms according to the height distribution. Trees in higher areas bloom first, trees in lower areas bloom later, so La Pan Tan commune is the earliest flowering area.
Currently, flowers have bloomed in some places such as Pu Nhu village (pictured), La Pan Tan commune and Mu Cang Chai district center. In addition, some other places have many To bamboo trees such as Thao Chua Chai village, Che Cu Nha commune, Mi Hang village, Mo De commune and Lao Chai commune.
