In the area of about 5,000 m2 in Huong Khe (Ha Tinh) is a system of tunnels, trenches and tunnels that are connected to each other and where Lieutenant General Dong Sy Nguyen chose to set up the forward headquarters.
In 1966, due to enemy bombing and bombardment, the Front Command of the General Department of Logistics, the 559th Command, and the 500th Division decided to move from Minh Hoa district (Quang Binh) to station in Huong Do commune. (Huong Khe district, Ha Tinh province).
This is the place where Lieutenant General Dong Sy Nguyen – Director of the General Department of forwarding Logistics cum Commander of the Truong Son Army set up the headquarters from 1966 – 1970 of 3 units: Front of the General Department of Logistics; 559 Corps Command; 500th Battalion Command.
This area is about 5,000 square meters, built with a system of underground tunnels, trenches, and tunnels to serve as a working place and shelter for Lieutenant General Dong Sy Nguyen and leaders of the military units.
At the entrance to the relic site, there is a stone stele more than 2 m high, which was built in 2002 by veterans of the Truong Son army.
The front of the stele is engraved with the names of the units that used to have the headquarters in Huong Do commune. On the reverse side are the names of military leaders including Lieutenant Generals: Dong Sy Nguyen, Director of the General Department of forwarding Logistics cum Commander of the Truong Son Army; Vu Xuan Chiem, Political Commissar of Truong Son Army; Nguyen Don, Commander of Group 500; Le Quang Dao, Political Commissar of 500.
The national resistance historical relic site, Forward Headquarters General Department of Logistics, 559th and 500th Group Commands has many items including the fourth-level house which is the headquarters of Truong Son Army Command. The house has two compartments, made of wood during the war, thatched, and thatched with bamboo walls.
The A-shaped tunnel under the tunnel is more than 1 m high, about 5 m long, 3 m wide. In the cellar is a bamboo cot that the soldiers used decades ago to work.
Living hall of military units. The building is about 75 m2 wide, like a cellar, 1 m lower than the road surface.
In addition, this place also has a shelter system with 3 doors to avoid bombs and bullets. This is the place where important meetings of commanders and generals take place. The tunnel is 2 m high, 10 m wide, now built with cement bags.
When the war ended, the workplaces of these three units were restored by the government, in which some items were renewed. In 2005, this relic complex was ranked a national historical and cultural relic by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism).
In 2013, it was recognized as a national-level cultural and historical relic, especially in the system of historical relics on Truong Son street – legendary Ho Chi Minh road.
Lieutenant General Dong Sy Nguyen’s real name is Nguyen Huu Vu (1923-2019), in Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province. General Nguyen was the commander of the Truong Son Army for the longest time (1967-1975), and was one of two generals of the Vietnam People’s Army to be promoted from colonel to lieutenant general.
After the war, he continued to hold many other important positions such as Deputy Minister of National Defense, Minister of Transport, Deputy Prime Minister…
His name goes along with miracles such as the organizer of a continuous traffic battle, spreading a net of fire on the top of Truong Son mountain, the system of “Bagua map” in Truong Son… The altar of Lieutenant General Dong Sy Nguyen was placed in the commander’s house, established by the people and local authorities in April 2019 – when he died.
According to Mr. Vo Van Trinh, director of the Center for Culture and Communication of Huong Khe district, the reason Lieutenant General Dong Sy Nguyen chose this position to set up the headquarters is that it has all the conditions of heaven, earth, and human harmony. with 4 best ones: safest, most secret, most unexpected and has the longest time.
“Following the flow of history – historical relic Commander of the Front Department of General Logistics Department, Command 559, Command 500 has gone down in history as a symbol of Vietnam’s strength, a place of pilgrimage towards Vietnam. The source of the heroic Truong Son army cadres and soldiers is the pride of the local people,” said Mr. Vo Van Trinh.
