Vietnamese author wins first prize for international travel photo

The new Travel Photographer of the Year 2021 contest has just announced the results, including two Vietnamese winners, Tran Viet Van and Nguyen Tan Tuan.

The Travel Photographer of the Year 2021 contest (Tourist Photographer of the Year – TPOTY) has just announced the results in early February. From 20,000 entries submitted by authors in 151 countries and territories, the jury found award winners in each category. The works are displayed online on the website and exhibited at Granary Square, near King’s Cross and St Pancras stations (London, UK) in April-May this year.

The overall winner of TPOTY 2021 is photographer Fortunato Gatto (Italy) with a series of amazing nature photos he took in Scotland.

Author Tran Viet Van, working at Lao Dong newspaper, Vietnam, won the second prize in the category of People and Stories, and the first prize for Smartshot iTravelled. He competed with a series of photos about a 90-year-old handmade leather shoe maker in Ho Chi Minh City. His name is Trinh Ngoc, he studied in Paris, France, and for many years made shoes for the Cambodian royal family as well as famous Vietnamese singers.

Photographer Nguyen Tan Tuan currently lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City. The photo above shows water buffaloes moving in herds to find new sources of grass on Dau Tieng Lake (Tay Ninh) in the dry season. The work is ranked at the top of the consolation prize photos in the Single photo section of the Portfolio.

Jie’s award-winning photo series captures flocks of flamingos flying back over Lake Magadi, Kenya. In the dry season, the lake is covered with sodium carbonate and attracts many migratory birds such as flamingos. It is the salty salt deposited in the lake that creates strange, winding shapes along the lakeside when viewed from above.
