With more than a month left until the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin in 2024, Pham Van Thanh’s family’s “going to the king” red grapefruit garden is ripe and radiating a gentle fragrance.
Mr. Thanh said that this year the weather is favorable, the grapefruit garden has a good harvest, his family’s more than 100 grapefruit trees are estimated to have about 2,000 fruits. “This year’s grapefruit ripened at the right time, the fruit was consistent and the yield was higher than previous years,” Mr. Thanh said excitedly.
The owner of the grapefruit garden said that in the past, red grapefruit varieties were grown a lot in Luan Van village, Tho Xuong commune, Tho Xuan district (Thanh Hoa). This type of grapefruit was once a specialty used to “advance the king”.
Nowadays, Luan Van red grapefruit is loved by many people and bought as Tet gifts. With high economic value, red grapefruit is restored by people, expanding the area to many villages in Tho Xuong commune.
According to Mr. Thanh, when young, Luan Van red grapefruit has green skin like regular grapefruits. Growing grapefruit does not require much care.
A grapefruit tree will produce fruit after about 3 years of planting. Normally, from mid-January every year, the tree will flower and bear fruit. By the 10th lunar month, grapefruit changes color. The entire grapefruit from the peel to the core turns red. Grapefruit peel is thin, grapefruit segments are pink and red, succulent, and has a mild sweet taste. In particular, when ripe, Luan Van red grapefruit exudes a unique fragrance and looks very beautiful.
“When burning incense, grapefruit retains its fragrance for a long time. There are fruits left for 2-3 months that still retain a light fragrance. Therefore, every Tet holiday, people often buy 1-2 fruits to make a five-fruit tray.” , Mr. Thanh shared.
Although the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin has not yet arrived, Mr. Thanh’s family’s grapefruit garden already has many customers coming to place orders to buy grapefruits. The owner of the grapefruit garden said that at this time, many customers had ordered about 1,000 grapefruits.
“Like every year, the price of grapefruit ranges from 100,000 VND to 150,000 VND/fruit. There are times when goods are scarce, a pair of grapefruits costs 500,000 VND. With 2,000 grapefruits in the garden, this year my husband and I estimate to earn about 200 million VND, minus the cost of fertilizer and care, you will earn about 130 million VND,” Mr. Thanh said.
Mr. Le Trung Hieu, Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Tho Xuong commune, Tho Xuan district, said that currently in the commune there are more than 30 hectares of red grapefruit, bringing high economic value.
“This is a local specialty grapefruit variety, originating from Luan Van village. There was a time when this grapefruit variety was lost. In 2010, the locality restored this grapefruit variety. Up to now, the red grapefruit variety Luan Van has been recognized as an OCOP product. On average, 1 hectare of grapefruit will bring in an income of about 500 million VND. With such high economic value, in the coming time we will continue to expand the area of grapefruit growing in the area.” , Mr. Hieu added.
