On Tet days, in the park of Thai Hai Cathedral (located along NH1, in P.Hiep Thanh, Nha Bay Town, Hau Giang), many people completed the process of forming buffalo from soil mixed with rice husks. and straw.

Mr. Nguyen Thong (45 years old), a believer, said that in previous years, the cathedral rarely did a mascot model to celebrate Tet. However, on this Lunar New Year, the parish priest decided to make a model, because the image of a buffalo is a “farmer friend” close to all ages. In addition, it can be used to guide children in the religion about animals that are very close to and close to Vietnamese villages.

To make this buffalo model, Mr. Thong and some brothers in the religion came up with the idea of body shape and then molded to match the true proportions of buffalo male, female buffalo, and buffalo. After making molds, Mr. Thong digs up soil and mixes with dry straw and rice husk ash to make a hard and quick-drying mixture and then adds “meat” to buffalo.

“Buffalo model is made from 2 layers of soil. After applying the first layer, wait until it dries, then apply the second layer and do it completely by hand. Only use your hands to cover and use the trowel to cover the shack soil. Depending on the size of the buffalo, it will take time from 1-2 days to complete. Particularly the eye is carefully polished to make the buffalo look as close as possible, ”said Mr. Thong.
