Mr. Huynh Duc Hieu’s method of using plastic pipes and an automatic misting system to grow vegetables is the first aeroponic vegetable growing model in Thanh Hoa city.

Living in Thanh Hoa city, Thanh Hoa province, Huynh Duc Hieu (born 1990) is passionate about agriculture. 

By chance, looking on social networks, he saw that the aeroponic vegetable growing model in Lam Dong province was highly effective, had many advantages and was suitable for the needs of people today, so he followed it.

After 3 months of studying, Mr. Hieu mastered the knowledge and received technology transfer from a company in Lam Dong province and then returned to his hometown to start implementing the model. 

“This idea also comes from people’s need to use clean vegetables. Currently, many people like to use clean vegetables, but do not have land to grow them, especially in city areas. Realizing, Growing aeroponic vegetables has superiority and can meet people’s needs, so I decided to research and learn this model,” Mr. Hieu shared.

According to Mr. Hieu, growing aeroponic vegetables is different from growing vegetables using traditional methods. Aeroponics vegetable growing is a cyclical technology and operates with automation.

In particular, aeroponic vegetables are not grown in the ground but will be grown on plastic pillars. Each pillar is designed with 48 holes for growing substrate, corresponding to 48 clusters or vegetable plants.

Before planting vegetables on plastic poles, Mr. Hieu used an organic mixture to grow the seeds.

Depending on the type of vegetable, after 10 to 15 days of incubation, seedlings will be placed in racks on plastic pillars for planting.

According to Mr. Hieu, the plastic pillars and water pipes are connected in a circulatory system.

“Water is stored in large tanks, then a pump is used to direct water into plastic pipes to spray into the vegetable planting holes. This watering is different from growing hydroponic vegetables, the water pumped out will be in the form of mist sprayed directly into the vegetable garden. Plant roots, mist each time from 3 to 6 minutes. The water used for this misting is water with nutrients. In particular, growing aeroponic vegetables will get completely natural light, without having to install a greenhouse.” , Mr. Hieu said.

Also according to Mr. Hieu, he is currently focusing on installing aeroponic vegetable growing systems for people around Thanh Hoa city. Installation cost is 1.5-1.8 million VND/plastic pillar. 

The young man said that with the area on the terrace and porch, people can install about 3-4 vegetable posts to meet their daily needs for vegetables.

“Because vegetable plants are not exposed to bacteria and disease-causing germs from the ground, growing vegetables using the aeroponics method also minimizes pests and is safe and clean for users,” Mr. Hieu said. 

In addition to installing a vegetable growing system, Mr. Hieu’s garden currently has 60 vegetable pillars, each yielding 7-10kg of product. The garden’s vegetable output can reach about 5 quintals of vegetables per month. Mr. Hieu said that in the coming time, he will expand the model to serve the people. 

Mr. Nguyen Duc Hoa, Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Thanh Hoa city, Thanh Hoa province, said that this is the first time in the area there is a model of growing aeroponic vegetables. According to Mr. Hoa, the aeroponic vegetable growing model is a high-tech agricultural production model. The products made ensure food safety and hygiene.
