In the last two months of the year, people in the Dak Ha district bustled harvests of ripe and red coffee beans.

Dak Ha district is one of the best coffee growing regions in Vietnam, located about 20 km north of the center of Kon Tum city, along Highway 14.

Dubbed the “capital of coffee” in Kon Tum, Dak Ha has an area of over 9,000 hectares of coffee growing. Most gardeners grow coffee due to the suitability of the climate and soil.

November, December is the harvest season for coffee beans here. The original fruits were reddish, after more than two weeks, they were all ripe and it was also the time to harvest. However, this year, due to the influence of storms in November, the water level in the Dak pxi River has risen, so some households have harvested early to prevent fruit from falling.

However, people are still optimistic about the season with a bright smile. Early in the morning, the workers drive a farm truck, bringing tarpaulins, rice and drinking water to the garden.

They stretched a large canvas around the base of the tree in rows so that the fruit wouldn’t fall out. They screw branches, pluck the fruit, with tall coffee trees, they have to use chairs or climb trees to pick bunches of fruit from the tops. Nearly an hour, when the canvas spread under the base covered with coffee pods, the collectors picked up the leaves, gathered them in bags and moved to another bed.

Nguyen Ngoc Thai (or Thai Bana), the photographer of the set of photos, said that his family also grows coffee, contracts for workers to pick fruits according to weights, with about 70,000 – 80,000 VND per quintal. Working hard, a day can pick 3 – 4 quintals of fresh coffee.

In June 2020, Dak Ha Coffee received the certificate of protection of geographical indications. Accordingly, the geographical indication area of Dak Ha coffee is located at an altitude of 523-875 m above sea level, including 11 communes and towns of Dak Mar, Ngok Wang, Ha Mon, Dak Ui, Dak La, Dak Long. , Dak Psi, Dak Ngok, Ngok Reo, Dak Hring and Dak Ha.

At the end of work, the farm truck carried the bags of coffee along the small roads in the garden, the field bank and then went home.

Sacks of fresh coffee are transported to the gathering place. Every house has a drying yard, on the peak harvest day, people also take advantage of the space in the garden, outside the alley to dry the canvas.

People rake and dry coffee to keep it in the sun. Depending on weather conditions, exposure time can be around 7 days.

When it is less sunny, many households have applied the method of drying coffee with a drying oven, saving more time.

The dried coffee fruit is mechanically rubbed to remove the outer shell for the finished coffee bean. And finally store the beans in sacks, place in a cool, dry place and wait until roasting time.

“For coffee growers in Dak Ha district, the coffee harvest season is bustling, but also very hard and hard. The season is also an opportunity for young people to come to experience, take photos and record videos, ”said Thai Bana.
